Yearly furry meeting in Mesa mixes art, animal costumes and Zumba

Those who choose to liven up in elaborate animal costumes and accept “fursonas” gathered in Mesa this week-end for Arizona Fur Con.

One participant into the furry subculture contrasted it to putting on a costume for Halloween.

“the folks that sort of notice it as weird, we simply state, ‘Do you realy ever wear a costume on Halloween? ‘ We simply do that 24/7, ‘” Samantha Shepler said.

Shepler’s fursona is Shiba, a Shiba Inu breed of canine that the 27-year-old defines as “a small, tough bundle of power. “
